Lotus Trophy Round 3 2005 | Mallala

Simon finishes 3rd at Mallala in South Australia driving the Lotus Elise. The cold, windy and sometimes wet circuit provided some fantastic racing

The Aussiefast Team arrived at the circuit early Friday morning and confronted cold, windy and wet conditions. Simon was not bothered by the wet conditions, as he is known to be formidable in the wet. A reasonable qualifying effort saw Simon start in 4th for race one, the track was dry and Simon made his move to the lead early while the guys battled the minor placing’s out. The chequered flag saw a gap of a couple of seconds back to 2nd place. Saturday morning the weather was even colder, and this time the race would be a wet affair. Starting from pole Simmo drove away almost a second a lap from the rest of the Elise drivers. Simon made a costly mistake whilst leading by 10 seconds that he would not recover from for the rest of the weekend. A hard charge after falling back to 6th still had Simon finish in 3rd. Sunday afternoon was the last race for the weekend, and to win the weekend Simmo had to finish 1st. A great start and it all looked to be going to plan; Simmo was gapping second place by one tenth of a second per lap. Disaster struck when problems selecting 3rd gear arose, Simon could not hold the fast charging drivers behind and he slipped to 3rd by race end. Simon is still very much in the championship hunt and is still confident of winning more races. To also come away with the fastest laps in the wet and the dry conditions at Mallala is also indicative of Simon's potential.
